REVIEWS of some of David Richard Fox's stage work.

"Pity poor Essex Man. ...He has become Mister Naff of the Nineties - a fact David Richard Fox exploits in his clever new comedy 'The Best Man' at Croydon Warehouse. ...Fox's state-of-the-nation satire in fact shoots arrows way beyond the Essex borders. ...Fox, who creams off the lead role of 'Mister Trivia', treads a tightrope between wackiness and predictability. ...The great quality of this play is the tension between plot and theme, which is carefully held by Bardy Thomas's production. Just as you think the last corner has been explored, it creeps up and coshes you in the back of the neck... How well both writer and director understand the comedy of surprise. How shrewdly, too, they pitch their social criticism...." THE GUARDIAN

"This Art Depot production at the Warehouse is one of those rare joys, a brilliantly observed play that has the bonus of a brilliantly observed performance by its author."

THE STAGE

..."Sharp satire on the world of advertising...."

MIDWEEK

"Gum chewing sales patter well worth listening to..."

THE TIMES

" There is no doubt that Mister Fox is a writer - and an actor - to watch".

WEEKEND TELEGRAPH.

THE BEST MAN

SWEET AS A NUT

David Fox's entertaining one-man show...A series of interweaved monologues by Beatles character types. Fox's performance... the kind of bravura event it's a delight to watch.

CITY LIMITS

"This is probably as fine a study of the worship of hollow icons as you could wish to see."

MIDWEEK.

"Fox presents a thoughtful, funny evening with flashes of brilliance.

EVENING STANDARD.

A fascinating and intelligent production.  TNT

THROUGH A GLASS ONION

"Lines of perspective criss-crossing the stage lead to a pictorial vanishing point while caricature personae doggedly fictionalise themselves out of existence. Edith's detective stories, written to a mathematical formula, prove more real than 'reality' itself when a poisoned sugar lump kills her and unleashes a string of pre-determined murders. Fiction chases reality in ever decreasing circles to finally triumph in Inspector Baxter's brilliantly deduced denouement. David Fox has intricately woven fiction and reality to produce an absurdly funny play. Fine performances from all the cast in this, Red Shift's fourth production".

X EQUALS MURDER

"Sci-fi comes in many guises, including the intellectual and politically allegorical varieties. Such is Dave Fox's device in this showing at the Old Red Lion... There is an apparent flippancy in the beginning of this story of man's itch towards the destruction of anything that is not safely familiar. This is there simply to lure us into acceptance; once that has been accomplished we are then plunged out of all our depths.... (The play) is tautly constructed and presented in a state of pared-down detail not always found in groups using visual means to underline a literate and articulate script. This is the sort of experimental theatre which really deserves its name - and support from audiences and funding bodies". CITY LIMITS

PLANET X

"...cleverly conceived and tightly executed, a menacing evening of swirling mists and evil experiments. At times it is very funny precisely because it is played straight, avoiding the temptation to knock off clay pigeons with easy and obvious spoofing. ... inanimate objects are represented by the mime of spirits in a perfect theatrical extension of the architectural imagery which is the prime doctrine of the gothic form. The stately, late-Victorian language of Dave Fox's script and Jonathan Holloway's inventive but firm direction give it the polish of a well-made thriller. Recommended".  TIME OUT
