RADIO

DRF wrote two radio series for kids with friend and colleague Alan Gilbey in the 90s. The first of these was a six-part comedy called 'Hit the Decks', chronicling the adventures of a would-be teenage DJ called Des and his attempts, with best pal Warren, to make a name for himself in the seedy, seaside-y town of Stagness. The series was commissioned and aired shortly before the advent of Radio 5 Live, which effectively put an end to children's radio drama. In her review in the Independent on Sunday, Sue Gaisford wrote: "...a marvellously witty serial aimed at just the teenage audience that is about to be dumped..." The second series, (actually a serial, one story told over five episodes), was called 'Time Hops' and featured two plucky teenagers being chased through time by a homicidal rabbit from the future called R.V., (pictured, sketch by Alan Gilbey). The avenging bunny is a mutated life-form trying to ensure that history is not changed, so his own species may survive, but he reckoned without those plucky, pesky kids... 'Time Hops' won a Writers' Guild Award for Best Children's Radio in 1995, and has since been repeated several times. Dave has also acted many times on radio. He played the part of bad boy Neville in the long-running Radio 4 soap opera 'Citizens', played dual roles in 'However', by Al Hunter-Ashton, and took the lead in a play called 'Hero' by Roderick Graham, about a soldier's return to civilian life after being wounded in a foreign conflict, and the guilty secret he has brought back with him.
